Democracy for America is not about Howard Dean. Even before the primaries began, those of us who joined his campaign realized it was more. The President of the United States is not a consumer product. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Although you have the freedom to tune out, it is your duty to be involved, stay informed, and hold your elected officials accountable for their actions.
Democracy for America is one of the few new political organizations with a mission that extends beyond November. We promote candidates who are socially progressive and fiscally responsible at all levels of government, because tomorrow’s leaders won’t materialize out of thin air. We encourage people to get involved in the political process, because whether you care or not, it does affect you. Voting is not enough — everybody should volunteer on somebody’s campaign. If you don’t like any of the candidates, that’s fine, you just have to run for office yourself.
I would like this blog to become a source for local political news and commentary, to be for Pittsburgh what so many blogs are at the national level. It’s your blog, too. What would you like to see?
